He was predeceased by: his son Jason Cole; his grandson James B. Cole III; his parents, Briscoe Cole and Laura Cody Cole; and his siblings, Pauline Lyons, William, Jerry, Mack and Arthur Cole.

He is survived by: his wife Sonja Griffin Cole; his son Jimmy Cole Jr; and his siblings, Alfred Cole (Ophene), Willie Mae Amos and Joyce Hubbard (Ronald). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews.
