He was predeceased by: his parents, Jewell Hyche Cates and B. R. Cates; and his brothers, Benjamin "Ben" and Benny Cates. He is survived by: his wife Mary Jean Cates; his children, Donnie Warren Cates Jr., Shannon Earnest Cates and Angela Emma Vincent (Ollie); and his siblings, Gary Cates (Cindy), Elaine Reed (Jesse), Gale Hasty (Ronny), Airi Creson (Charlie) and Becky Reed. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
