John Oliver Patton Obituary
John Oliver Patton, born in Vonore, TN passed away peacefully at home covered in the deep love and prayers of his family on August 22nd, 2024. After 99 remarkable years, he decided it was time to leave his earthly home for his new, heavenly dwelling. He is now experiencing the Love of God in its fullness. John was married to Wanda Fields, the love of his life, for more than 50 years. They dearly loved their two children, Terry and Nancy Gail. He was fortunate to have Gail by his side, caring for him all the way to the end.
He had Terry, to keep him active going here, there and everywhere. He thoroughly enjoyed living life to the fullest with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. A man of few complaints, but many stories, John often spoke of his long 40 year career operating heavy machinery for TVA and Harrison Construction. He liked to claim that he'd built just about every road and building in the area—a statement his family found both amusing and endearing, as it became a beloved family jest. There was no denying his work ethic and he loved to offer a helping hand.
Generosity was another of John's defining traits. He believed in never owing anyone a dime, yet he always had something to give anyone in need. Many dollar bills have been pulled out of the front of his overall bib to hand to his nieces and nephews as well as his great-grandchildren. He fervently claimed to not have an enemy in the world! John was especially proud of his service as a WWII Veteran, where he served in the U.S. Navy and was tasked with teaching his fellow servicemen to swim. Later in life, at the age of 87, he received salvation through Jesus Christ and was baptized, becoming a member of Union Grove Baptist Church—a decision that brought him great peace.
He was the last living child of Alfred and Abigale Patton and he was looking forward to reuniting with all his kinfolk. So, until we all see him again, we say goodbye for now and thank you for leaving such an amazing imprint on all of our hearts! He was preceded in death by his loving wife Wanda; his parents, Alfred and Abigale Patton; in-laws, Luke and Effie Fields; many treasured siblings, Ada, Alvin, James, Alta, Harley, Harvey, Frank, Glen, Arvil; beloved brother and sistes- in- law, Martin Fields, Bettie Fields and Elaine Fields; his adored daughter-in-law, Sharon Patton; special niece Kim Plogger.
He is survived by his son Terry Patton (Brenda); his daughter Nancy Gail Headrick; his grandchildren Doug Headrick (Kelly), Nathan Patton, Daniel Patton (Paula), Christy Ford (Derek) and Kendra Batey (Matt) ; his great-grandchildren, Leo Bonifacio, Joey Bonifacio, Conner Patton, Sophia Headrick, Ally Bonifacio, Luke Headrick, Crew Batey, Veyda Batey, and Journey Patton; beloved brother-in-law, Ronald Fields; brother, Charlie Patton; as well as many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
A funeral service will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, August 25th, 2024 with friends and family gathering at 3:00 P.M. for the receiving of friends. The service will begin at 5:00 P.M. immediately followed by the burial with military honors. A meal will be provided afterward in the fellowship hall, because John always enjoyed good food, good company and fellowship. The service will be officiated by Rev. Ralph Patton and Rev. Sean Patton. Arrangements by Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville.
