He was predeceased by: his parents, Jason Smith and Idella Wells Smith; his wife Charlotte Smith (Cashon); his son Jon Smith; and his sister Helen Braddock.
He is survived by: his children, Richard M. Smith, Jr. (Barbara) of Tallahassee, Jason Smith (Tina) of Sevierville, Sarah Bannister of Dorchester and Susannah Murphy of Plymouth, Massachusetts; his stepchildren, Ann Bird (Joe) of Memphis, Wendy Dalton (Frank) of Troy, Beth Hutcheson of Union City, Joe D. Spicer, Jr. of Union City and Richie Spicer (Sandi) of Hendersonville; and his niece Stephanie Braddock Kelleher (Brian) of Dade City, Florida. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren; and 39 great grandchildren.
