He was predeceased by: his father James Johnson Sr.; his sister Patty Ann Vaught; and his nephew Nick McMillan. He is survived by: his wife Debra Ann Johnson; his children, Mariah Haynes (Michael) and Nathan Johnson; his granddaughter Alexis Haynes; his brother Darrell Wayne Johnson; his mother Geraldine Johnson; and his parents-in-law, Leonard and Debbie Roberts.
