He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Sr. Scales and Zelma Henson Scales. He is survived by: his son William C. "Willie" Poteete; his grandson William Tanner Poteete; his siblings, Donald Lee Scales (Joann) and Wanda L. Cole; and his nieces, Lynn Reed, Jamie Cunningham and Kelly Scales.
