He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Edward and Eva Faye Brunson Smalley; his siblings, Dennis Smalley and Sherry Clausing; and his brother-in-law Gary Schulte.

He is survived by: his wife Linda Smalley of Spring City, Tennessee; his sons, Robert Smalley (Amy) of Columbus, Brandon Smalley (Corinne Roland) of Peru and Shannon Smalley (Dawn) of Kokomo, Indiana; his siblings, Patricia Schulte of Spring City, Linda Sheneman (Gary) of Peru, Indiana and Carl Edward Smalley Jr. (Jill) of Kokomo, Indiana; his grandchildren, Ashley Shrader (Phil), Hayley, Gabriel Smalley and Madison Smalley; his great grandchildren, Jayden, Kaylynn and Atticus Shrader; and his siblings-in-law, Kay Smalley and Ken Clausing. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
