He was predeceased by: his wife Rosita Barrett; his sons, Jerry Allan and Mitchell "Wade" Barrett; the mother of his children Sammie Barrett Stipe; his parents, Chess Barrett and Frankie Barrett; and his siblings, Sonny, Larry, Sandy and Janice.

He is survived by: his children, John Barrett and Alisha Barrett-Ross (Tim); his brother Gary Barrett; and his grandchildren, Tara, Caitlyn, Lisi, Noah, Lainie and Dakota. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and extended family.
