He is survived by: his wife Louise Griffin McDowell of Signal Mountain; his children, David McDowell of Saraland and Karen McDowell of Lexington; and his grandsons, James McDowell (Angela) of Saraland, Matthew McDowell (Kayse) of Wilmer Alabama, Scott Denton (Barbara) of Duisburg and Germany. He is also survived by six great grandchildren.
