He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas "Tommy" Wesley Stem and Margaret Elizabeth Stem; and also Thomas Wesley Stem, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Mahaffey Stem of Smithville; his son James Edward Stem (Tonya) of Sparta, TN; his grandchildren, Rayden Stem, Mileena Stem of Sparta and Michael Inge of Colorado; and his sisters, Martha Milner of Shelbyville, TN, Barbara Pinkston of Clarksville, TN and Kay. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
