He was predeceased by: his wife Elizabeth Helton Smith; his parents, Jesse Lafatte and Verdie Ann Simpson Smith; and his siblings, Earl (Douglas), Tillman, Calvin (Louise), Raymond, Jesse, Jr., Huey, Elsie Caldwell (Carson) and Lotus Arnold (Hiram) of Virginia.
He is survived by: his daughters, Carolyn Ann Gardner (Darryl) and Brenda Joan Buchanan (George Eddie); his granddaughter Yvette Janine Munsey (Eddie); his great grandchildren, Kayla Elizabeth Harrell and Elishia Marie Harrell; his great great grandchild Jameson Bundren; his brother D. L. Smith (Joann); and his sister-in-law Wanda McLain Smith. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
