He is survived by: his wife Bernice Tunnell Bates; his sons, Aaron Bates (Helen) of Birdhill, Ireland and Brian Bates (Tasha) of Rogersville; his grandchildren, Hannah Bates, Maylan Bates, Abigail Bates and Eric Bates; and his siblings, Mary Belle Price of Kingsport, Tom Bates of Rogersville and Jim Bates (Barbara) of Rogersville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
