He was predeceased by: his wife Carolyn Sue Brummitt Stapleton; his parents, James Brownlow and Pearl Mae Davis Stapleton; his brother Robert "Bob" Stapleton; his brothers-in-law, Paul Cody and Dee Cook; and his close friend Ted Dufrane.
He is survived by: his children, Martha Lea Stapleton, Susan Cornell (Andy) of Nashville and Craig Stapleton; his grandchildren, James Brett Stapleton of Morristown and Clara Abigail Cornell of Nashville; his siblings, Lillian Ruth Cody of Kingsport, Mary Elizabeth Cook of Rogersville and Thomas P. Stapleton of Rogersville; his sister-in-law Faye Stapleton of Church Hill; and his close friends, George, Elocile Uran, Bob, Sylvia Sabo, Faith Dufrane, Lynn and Janice Collins. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
