He was predeceased by: his son James Tate; and his granddaughter Ashley Marie Tate. He is survived by: his wife Faye Tate; his children, Ray Tate (Wendy) of Wilmington, NC and Melissa Canady (Randy) of Hampstead, NC; and his sister Betty Bridges of Wilmington. He is also survived by 3 granddaughters; one great-granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cranberry Baptist Church, 5750 N US 19E Hwy, Newland, NC 28657.
