He was predeceased by: his father Delbert Cate; his mother-in-law Sandy Newman; and his cousins, Delisa Hartman, Shelley and Billy Trentham.
He is survived by: his wife Sallie Newman Cate; his mother June Allen Cate; his in-laws, Eddie and Claudia Newman; his children, Zack Cate (Katherine) and Abbie Cate; his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Anslee, Zachary Jr. and Brooks Cate; his sister Karen Fleury (Aaron); his niece Tara Fleury Bridges (Jeff); his great-nephew Sullivan Bridges; his brother-in-law Joey Newman (Kelly); his cousins, Tony, Tammy Huskey and Dan; and his close friends, Bo Carroll and Dave Duncan.
