He was predeceased by: his parents, William Gillespie (Bill) and Helen Nunier Gillespie; his brothers, Danny and Melvin; his aunt Lula Mae; his uncle Lonnie Webb; his grandparents, Menzie, Jessie Gillespie, John and Barbara Nunier; and his parents-in-law, Ray and Pauline Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Shirley; his son Michael Gillespie of Knoxville; his daughter-in-law Kym Gillespie Bryant (Chip); his granddaughters, Ashlyn Gillespie Bryant of Knoxville and Summer Bryant of Knoxville; his siblings, David, Ronnie Gillespie and Lula Gillespie; his siblings-in-law, Jewel Whitley and James Smith; and his niece Sandy Phillips.
