He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Virgil Long and Minnie Annie Gibson Long; his brother L. V. Long, Jr.; and his children-in-law, Robbie Cornwell and Sylvia LeCroy.

He is survived by: his wife Martha Jean Taylor Long of Portland, TN; his children, Melinda Cornwell of Scottsville, KY and Joe Wayne Long, Jr. of Donelson, TN; his grandchildren, Kellie Brown Carter of Scottsville, KY, Justin Brown (Jamie) of Woodburn, KY, Jeremy Brown of Scottsville, KY and Austin LaCroix (Sabrina) of Portland, TN; his great grandchildren, Kendall Pearson (Xander), Mason Brown, Cooper Brown, Morgan Carter and Ellie Brown; and his great great grandchild Selma Eaton. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
