He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Frank, Eliza Merritt, Jesse and Josie Loveday; his parents, James Hubert Merritt and Alma Leona Loveday Merritt; and his stepmother Loretta Young Merritt.

He is survived by: his wife Jane Delila Key Merritt; his sister Janie M.; and his brother-in-law David L. Phillips (Tracey Justice).
