He was predeceased by: his parents, Vance Carlyle Thornton and Willie Jo Lain Thornton; and his daughter Shana Thornton Brainerd. He is survived by: his wife Billye Sumars Thornton of Newbern, Tennessee; and his sons, Jarrell L. "Jay" Thornton, Jr. of Newbern and Erick Andrew Thornton of Collierville. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
