He was predeceased by: his parents, James Barry Burney and Wilma Lee Westbrook Burney; and his sisters, Martha Burney McClure and Eloise Burney. He is survived by: his wife Jane Elizabeth "Betty" Smith Burney of Huntsville, Alabama.; his children, James David Burney of Rutledge, Tennessee and Amy Burney Bates of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Hannah Burney Johnson (Billy) of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Alexandra Burney of Kihei, Hawaii, William Bates (Kathryn) of Birmingham, Alabama and Bradford Bates of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and his great grandchildren, Jane, Johanna, Jordan and Jewell Johnson.
Visitation was held on Friday, November 15th 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Woodfin Funeral Chapel - Murfreesboro (1488 Lascassas Pike, Murfreesboro, TN 37130). A funeral service was held on Friday, November 15th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Friday, November 15th 2024 at the Evergreen Cemetery (519 Greenland Dr, Murfreesboro, TN 37130).
