He is survived by: his children, Judy Sides (Tony) of Middleton, TN, James Townsend (Michelle) of Walnut, MS, Jerry Townsend of Middleton, TN and Jimmy Townsend (Tammey) of Middleton, TN; his daughter-in-law Carolyn Townsend of Middleton, TN; his sister Rosie Toms of Middleton, TN; and his grandchildren, Jennifer Beavers (William), Jeanie Smith (David), Christopher Sides (Lindsey), J. R. Townsend (Heather), Casey Townsend (Jennifer), Jimmy Townsend, Kristen Dyer (Terry) and Brittany Townsend. He is also survived by nineteen great-grandchildren.
