He was predeceased by: his wife Peggy Joyce Morgan McDonald; his parents, Fred Morgan McDonald, Jr and Kate Lee Cundiff McDonald; and his brother Fred Morgan McDonald III. He is survived by: his children, John Cundiff McDonald, Jr. (Madeline), Nancy Joyce McDonald Kornegay (Gary) and Mary Margaret McDonald; his grandchildren, Cassie Michelle McDonald, Kellie McDonald Chapman (Derek), John Morgan Kornegay and Kate Kornegay Madison (Harry); and his sister Kate McDonald Dangler.
In his later years, he devoted his time to caring for his wife during her battle with Alzheimer's disease.
