Hillis (Grace) and Iris Hillis Adams (O'Rene); his siblings, Lucille Wagner, Jeweline McGowan, Anna Mae Sharp and Bobby Adams; his brothers-in-law, Robert, Larry Townsend and Gary Davis; his grandmother Lee Hillis; his parents-in-law, Ruby Davis and Robert Townsend; his brother-in-law Hoss; and his stepbrother Everett "Spud" Powers.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn A. Townsend Hillis; his cousin Homer Kirby; his children, Vickie Carol Hillis, James H. Hillis Jr. (Monti Hillis), Bradley T. Hillis (Kim Hillis) and Teresa Hillis; his siblings, Deborah Ballew, I. V. Hillis, Jr., Julius Adams and Bill Adams; and his grandchildren, Lindsey, Bryan Matheny, Wesley, Darrell Cook, Tiffany Foster, Taylor Hillis, Cody Mackie, Hayley, Dennis Demps, Maggie Mangram and Melissa Jones.
