He was predeceased by: his wife Towanda Pace Payne; and his parents, William Sawyer Payne and Ruby Mae Bowman Payne. He is survived by: his children, Lisa Russell (Martin), William James Payne (Chawnna), Mary Pace and Marcus Pace (Samantha); and his siblings, Shirley Watson, Jimmy Payne and Wayne Payne. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
