He was predeceased by: his wife Naomi Shields; his parents, Andrew Shields and Frances Oliver Shields; his siblings, Herman, Flora Headrick, Nola Shields, Norma Cunningham, Sue Ella Fagg and Dorothy Lucas; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Merriman and Betty Merriman. He is also survived by cousins and friends.
