He was predeceased by: his parents, Lloyd Wayne Umstead and Robbie Jo Judd; and his brother Lloyd Freeman Umstead. He is survived by: his wife Dale Umstead; his children, Michael Umstead (Sarah) and Alisa Keller (Matthew); and his sisters, Pamela Wilson, Vickie Alsup and Kim Flowers. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

“My condolences to Gerald's family & friends. Gerald was one of my favorite people that I knew at the Ford plant. We worked together in the mid 70's. He called me doc & I called him Bumstead. Working side by side we got to know each other well. I felt honored that Gerald shared some of his Vietnam experiences with me among other personal stories we shared. He was a kind hearted soul & genuine gentleman that loved family & mother nature. My life was made better by his friendship RIP Bumstead”
