He was predeceased by: his parents, Clark H. Thompson and Helen E. Thompson (Skidmore); his sisters, May Harris and Mary Thompson; and his nephew James Ireland.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Ann Durand; his children, Marc Thompson of Waterford, Jennifer Johnson (Scott) of Flushing and Julia Frasier of Swartz Creek; his grandchildren, Trevor Thompson (Elizabeth), Kristen Romps (Christopher), Angela Johnson and Marlena Frasier; and his great grandchildren, Sophia, Corwin, Gisella and Xavier Thompson.
