He was predeceased by: his parents, James M. Shults and Martha Ellen Fox Shults; his former wife Jalene Yocom Shults; his wife Shirley Bradley Shults; his sons, Donnie Shults and Tim Shults; and his siblings, Lola Fincher, Marie Kelley, Flora Fleeman, Earl Shults and James Shults, Jr..

He is survived by: his children, Judy Cothren (Eddy) of Lawrenceburg, TN, Janice Thomas (Paul) of Franklin, TN, Beverly Taylor (Ronnie) of Lawrenceburg, TN and Ricky Shults (Patsy) of Lawrenceburg, TN; his stepdaughter Sherry Haley of Smyrna, TN; his brothers, Walter Shults of Leoma, TN and Charlie Shults of Leoma, TN; and his grandchildren, Travis, Becky, Brittany, Wesley, Jacob, Cade, Laura, Austin, Anna, Emily, Will, Jay, Adam, Jacklyn, Sandy, Kalyn, Jennie and Hunter. He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren.

Family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
