He was predeceased by: his parent Jodie Mae; his sister Joyce Haywood; and his stepson Ben Harrell. He is survived by: his wife Nelda Thomas Kersey; his children, Melanie Kersey (Paul Woo), Amy Kersey Muldowny (Steve) and Mel Kersey, III (Polly); his stepdaughters, Sherri Harrell Tipton (Charles) and Jill Harrell Wheeler (Jeff); his stepdaughter-in-law Diana Black Harrell; his grandchildren, Jeremy Woo, Harrison Kersey, Cole Rogoski, Oscar Kersey and Freya Kersey; his stepgrandchildren, Maggie Gilbert (Chad), Steve Wheeler (Jenny), Katy Eason (Michael), Emily Harrell and Elise Harrell; and his sisters, Shirley Young and Jo Peden (Eleanor Nelson). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and step-great-grandchildren.
Instead of flowers, Mel asks that you pay it forward by implementing an act of kindness or contributing to the organization of your choice in his memory.
