He was predeceased by: his father Raymond Hovater; and his brother Tim Hovater. He is survived by: his mother Earline Hovater (Mills); his wife Susan Hovater (Newton); his daughter Melissa Hovater (David); his sister Pat Thompson; his nieces, Kim Reid (David) and Amy Patterson (Chris); his great-niece Madelyn Patterson; and his friend Matthew Griffin. He is also survived by many extended family and friends.
