He was predeceased by : his parents, James Riley Smith and Nell Browning Smith; and his sister Virginia Acker (Bob). He is survived by : his wife Joan Smith; his sister Cornelia "Connie" Brown (Paul); and his children, Kim Stuart (Tim), Mike Smith and Neal Smith (Becky). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 13th 2024 at 1:00 PM at the Rose Mann Heritage Chapel (6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919). The military honors was held on Thursday, June 13th 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Woodlawn Cemetery (4500 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920).
