As we bid Nila Ruth farewell, let us not mourn the absence of her physical form, but rather celebrate the essence of her spirit that lingers in the spaces between moments. For Nila Ruth is not truly gone, but merely transformed, her energy intertwined with the fabric of the universe itself, forever dancing among the stars.
She was predeceased by: her parents, John Barnett and Violet Hawk Barnett; and her siblings, Earl Bennett and Bobbie Rowe. She is survived by: her husband Norman Mathes; her children, Johnny Berry of Johnson City, Elizabeth Berry of Erwin and Lisa Berry of Erwin; and her sister Linda Herrell (Danny) of Johnson City. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, February 14th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home (800 E Watauga Ave, Johnson City, TN 37601). A funeral service was held on Friday, February 14th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
