He was predeceased by: his wife Eldean Helle; his son Dave Helle; his parents, Paul Helle and Ina Helle; his parents-in-law, Albert and Norah "Johnnie" Keck; and his siblings-in-law, Jack Colley, John Essex, Norma Essex and Edith Cavanaugh.

He is survived by: his children, Robert, Jr. of Green Valley, AZ, Mike (Libby) of Knoxville and Julie Payne of Tusculum; his daughter-in-law Jane Morrison of Limestone; his grandchildren, Ben Helle (Alicia), Katie Sunday (Nate), Carrie Curry (Brian), Scott Helle, Keith Helle (Halie), Nicholas Helle (Kylie), Paul Helle (Michelle), Carly Ricart (Glade) and Mackenzie Ontiveros (Alex); and his sister Mary Lou Colley of Paulding, OH. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Reformation Lutheran Church.
