He was predeceased by: his parents, Glennie Cates and Alice Cates; and his siblings, Dewey, James, George Cates, Louise Parnell and Frances Hodgkins.

He is survived by: his wife Brenda Doty Cates; his son Dean; his daughter-in-law Teresa Cates; his daughter Donna Cates; his grandchildren, Dylan, Jacob and Lauren Cates; and his great grandchild Josie. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Tunnell to Towers organization or a organization of the donor's choice in Dennis's memory.
