He was predeceased by: his parents, L. M. Mathes and Willie Mathes (late Louise Campbell Mathes); his sons, James "Jim" Mathes and Dale Mathes; and his siblings, Lochiel Mason, Reba Estko, Thelma Dickerson, Zuella Miller and Paul Mathes.
He is survived by: his wife Betty Mathes; his granddaughter Lindsay Franklin (Josh); his daughter-in-law Melissa Grissinger (Matthew); his grandson John Neal Grissinger; his great grandchild Brett Franklin; his friends, Keith, Myna Bell Williams, Andy, Mekindra, Otto, Townes Williams, Haley, Bryan, Addi and Deegan Dean; and his nephew Bill Herrell. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
