He was predeceased by: his wife Nancy Shamwell; his son James Michael Shamwell (Glynda); and his brothers, Horce Wayne and Charles Ervin Shamwell. He is survived by: his daughter Karen Mabry; his sister Virginia Nell Winters; his grandchildren, Lindsey Mabry, Ashley Mabry, Jessica Kesler (Robby), Tiffany Holmes (Roy) and Kayla Haley (Andrew); and his great grandchildren, Dalton Head, Emily Holmes, Becca Haley and Eli Holmes.
