He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Lindsay Hunter and Ruby Beck Hunter; and his daughter-in-law Denise Hunter. He is survived by: his wife Mattie (Hix); his children, David Hunter (Chere' Byrum) of Gainesboro and Linda Gregory (David) of Hendersonville, Tennessee.; and his grandchildren, Melissa Baker (Brad), Nat Byrum (Hannah), Ryan Hunter (Lorraine), Becky Chastain (Kelly), Bethany Vines (Zac), Ben Byrum (Adri) and Sarah Tarpley (Trey). He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

During the time of the Covid lockdown and at the age of 90, Howard authored 4 small Christian books which examined the meaning and purpose of life.
