He was predeceased by: his mother Josephine Wells Mason; his stepfather Melvin Mason; and his son Donald Scott Gillespie. He is survived by: his children, Shannon Jones (Larry), Sherree Capshaw (Todd), Shane Gillespie (Mary), Brandon Gillespie (Tammy) and Shonda Carter (Michael). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
