He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin "Howard" and Ethel Ross Benson; and his sister Pattye Benson Overall. He is survived by: his spouse Billie Wood Benson; his sons, James Fredrick Benson, Jr. (Amy) and Matthew Benson (Amy); his siblings, Carol Holliday, Glenda Houston and Jerry Benson; his grandchildren, Katie Prentice (Kenan), Caroline Benson, Emily Holman (Nathan), Jeb Benson, Aaron, Emma, Mattie and Noelle Benson; and his great grandchildren, Benson Prentice and Lottie Beth Prentice.
