He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Van Hampton and Beulah Rebecca Perry Hampton; his wife Betty Neal Martin Hampton; and his siblings, Leon Morris Hampton and Clara Ann Blackwell.
He is survived by: his sons, Leon Hampton (Freeda) of Granville, Martin Hampton of Nashville, James Hampton, Jr. (Kelly) of Nashville and Ray Hampton (Billie) of Goodlettsville; his stepson Robert Wesley Martin III (Christina) of Cookeville; his daughters, Kim Holding (Brian) of Murfreesboro and Millicent McQuiston (Robert) of Granville; his stepdaughters, Dottie Brewer of Arrington, TN, Diane Shaw of Antioch, TN and Sherrie Cunningham of Hermitage; and his sisters, Melissa Hampton of Castalian Springs and Dorothy Jenkins of Smyrna. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren along with other relatives and friends.
