It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of John Townsend Matthews of Franklin, Tennessee, who passed away on December 7, 2022, at the age of 76, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. LeRoy Borum Matthews and Mary Shaw Townsend Matthews; and his brother James William. He is survived by: his wife Joy Wills Matthews; his children, Elizabeth Matthews Lai (Mark) and Daniel Townsend Matthews (Sarah); his grandchildren, John Matthews Lai, Georgiana Catherine Lai, James Shepherd Lai, Everett Anderson Matthews and Simmons Wills Matthews; his sister Mary Shaw Sanderson (Julian); and his sister-in-law Marjorie Rippetoe Matthews. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stephens Valley Church and RIFA (Regional Inter-Faith Association, Jackson).

I will remember him for his sense of humor, his excellent care of his patients, and his ability to continue to be a perfect gentleman in the most difficult of circumstances.
