He was predeceased by: his parents, Homer Briggs and Flora Proffitt Briggs; his wife Norma Ruth Briggs; his son James Doyle Briggs; his granddaughter Shaina Lee Whitt; his son-in-law David Whitt; and his siblings, H. Y. Briggs, Sarah McCurry, Ida Mae Tipton, Betty Timberlake and Vivian Harmon.
He is survived by: his daughters, Lisa Whitt of Mars Hill, NC and Darlene White (Jonas) of Erwin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
