He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Smithson and Athena Nokes Smithson; his children, Randall Alan Smithson and Kathy Smithson; and his sisters, Thelma Crosslin and Martha Jean Melton.

He is survived by: his wife Louise Smithson; his son Danny Owen Smithson, Jr. (Pam); his grandchildren, Adam Patterson, Erin Levin, Peter Benton Smithson, Seth Smithson, Sara Garland (Kris), Rachel Hughes and Hannah Jones (Preston); and his daughter-in-law Traci Smithson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
