He was predeceased by: his parents, John Joseph Smith and Anna Graf Smith; his son Jason Scott Smith; and his sister Judith Rojewski. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Jean French Smith of Dyersburg, Tennessee; his children, Jeff Smith (Becky) of Newbern, Tennessee and Lillian "Cricket" Jamison (Chad) of Newbern; and his grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Jessica Finn, Hali Rackley, Teo Rackley, Elizabeth Merritt, David Smith and Ellyn Smith. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren.
