It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of James R. Thurmond of Dyersburg, Tennessee, who passed away on January 14, 2025, at the age of 90, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, George Evans Thurmond and Mattie Louise Critchfield Thurmond; his wife Shirley Jones Thurmond; his son Terry Thurmond; and his siblings, Talmage Thurmond, Pauline Dodson Grimes, June Nunley, Beadie Duggan, Sue Stanfield, Dorothy Kaye and Maxine Clayton.
He is survived by: his children, Sam Thurmond of Nashville, TN, Mitzi Riggs (Mike) of Dyersburg, TN, Susan Troy (Bill) of Dyersburg, TN, Cheri Pilkenton (William) of Dyersburg, TN and Trudy Jones (Chris) of Eads, TN; his sister Ann Quick of Biloxi, MS; and his grandchildren, Emily Baker, Abbey Williams, Harris Troy, John Troy, Hanna Jones, Charlie Thurmond and Chase Pilkenton. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the Dyersburg Funeral Home (420 US-51, Dyersburg, TN 38024). A graveside service was held on Friday, January 17th 2025 at 1:30 PM at the Thurmond Cemetery (1023 Beech Bluff Rd, Halls, TN 38040).
