He was predeceased by: his parents, Annie Young James and William R. James; his son Mark James; his siblings, Velma Reed and Ralph James; and his nephew Larry Reed.

He is survived by: his wife Christine Goodman James; his sons, Steve James (Kim) of Dayton and Mike James (Lorri) of Dayton; his grandchildren, Holly Simpson, Logan James (Meagan) and Brieana James; and his niece Anita Jones.
