He was predeceased by: his parents, Riley James and Alice Sutton James; his sons, Carrol, Jesse and Michael James; and his siblings, Roy Ralph, Ray, Junior, Creed James and Edna Swann.
He is survived by: his wife Frances Whitaker James; his grandchildren, Jesse James, Carla Long (Randy), David James, Angelia James and Kelly Andrews; and his sister Essie Moore. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
