He was predeceased by: his parents, John Martin and Odessa Cates Sr. (Pittman); his siblings, Charles Cates Sr., John Cates Jr., Irene Miller and Barbara Wattenbarger; and his son Joe Ross.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Edens Cates; and his daughter Pruda May (Mo). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
