He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruben Bates and Hemmie Bates; his brothers, Tarance "Tood", Herbie and Coy; and his niece Shelia Bates Kitts.
He is survived by: his wife Peggy Bates (Sharp); his son Monty (Patti) of Braslton, Georgia; his grandchildren, Patrick Bates (Alicia) of Jefferson, Georgia, Marine SSgt Adam (Michelle) of Hawaii, Caleb, Ansley and Tinley Bates; and his nieces, Donna Collins (Donnie), Ronda Bates, Vickie Garren, Carla Ballinger and Christy Bates.
