He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Smithers and Kathryn Smithers. He is survived by: his wife Gail Smithers; his son Chad Smithers of Cordova, TN; and his brothers, Robert Miller Smithers, Jr. (Mary) of Gainesville, FL and John Richard Smithers of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by 3 nephews, 2 nieces, and 4 great-nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
